These last weeks Kenyan avocado producers began shipping high volumes of avocados to Europe, kicking off their 2022 season. Over the past few years, Kenya has destroyed its reputation in the European market by consistently sending inferior quality avocados to Europe. As a result, many EU importers avoid avocados from Kenya, as they always present issues with the dry matter, lenticel, and internal browning. Kenya's main advantage in the market has been its ability to undercut other origins with low prices. However, as of this year, Kenya is introducing new measures to improve its quality. The government has implemented new policies and procedures in which all avocado exports leaving for Europe must be certified by the government for having at least 21% dry matter. Importers are curious to see how this 2022 season develops with these new government-mandated quality standards in place. This could be a good year for Kenya.
