The fungus, Foc R4T, is particularly destructive, causing the bananas' wilt and death. The most severe thing is that it remains for decades in the soil, deteriorating the soil quality.

A couple of years ago, Fusarium race 4 (Foc R4T) was detected in Colombia. Since all the actors involved in the banana and plantain chain did an excellent job detecting, the outbreak did not leave the initial zone in Guajira. Periodic reports indicated a stable affected area of no more than 200 hectares.

However, in the second half of 2021, a new outbreak has become a great concern to the industry. The outbreak occurred in Magdalena's main banana-producing area, about 15,000 hectares. So far, the outbreak area is under quarantine to prevent the spread and new outbreaks affecting Colombia's banana economy.
