The world is demanding high-quality and big-size Hass Avocados at the moment. Large supplying countries, including Mexico are trying to expand their market size with cheaper and smaller fruit while having a significant hurdle, shipping reliability which results in the supply and demand slowdown at a tremendous rate. New Zealand growers can have a competitive advantage and take more market share if only they are able to harvest the fruit in time. Weather and labor shortages due to pandemic restrictions are significantly affecting the picking and packing process. Due to short supply and high demand, prices are rising.
On average, the increase rate per tray of avocados, from 18 to 30 count size profile, is between 2.5 - 3% per month. This relates to most sea freight containers. As the dry matter and maturity of the fruit increases, more exporters turning to air freight which will make the product even more expensive.
