One of the segments of fruit growing that went through the tightest at the height of the pandemic begins to recover sweeter expectations for trade. Papaya has everything to win back the domestic and foreign markets. Retail prices are starting to get cheaper. On the external flank, the resumption of a greater number of flights will bring down airfares. And at both ends, without the competition of the traditional beautiful variety: the Formosa papaya.

The higher offer makes the difference for less in the final price. Even if it implies a loss of revenue for the producer, it increases the consumption potential and, therefore, of more significant sales volumes in the properties around Linhares (ES), where the production of the species is concentrated.

The moment has been following, the oxygenation of the fruit offer in Europe, the main international destination. Between March and April, when the peak of the pandemic on the old continent drastically limited the frequencies of the air modal, tariffs reached around R $ 2.10 / kg. Brapex now believes that for the rest of the year, the flow of trade will resume, with papaya accounting for around 80% of total exports.

The high dollar should also be a strong driver of revenue. And thanks to this variety of large and rustic papaya that Brazil maintained the average of exports in 2020. More resistant, the fruit took advantage of the maritime modal. Brazil exported 21 thousand tons until July. In 2019, all shipments totaled 44.2 thousand tons.
