Peru exported FOB US $ 1,414 million to the US in agricultural products until July 2020 (+9% more compared to the previous year). With this scenario, Peru position itself as the fourth largest food supplier in the United States (4.1% share, 0.3pp more than 2019). United States top suppliers were Mexico (34% share), Canada (12% share) and Chile (5% share). Unfortunately for Chile, it was the only country whose shipments fell (-7%).
The main Peruvian products sent to the United States during 2020 were asparagus (10.4%), avocado (9.8%) and mandarin (5.6%).
Regarding asparagus, the US imported 168,340 mt (US $ 437 million), +2% more in volume (-8% less in value) compared to 2019. Peru shipped 30,062 mt (US $ 146 million). Despite the good reception of Peruvian asparagus, Mexico is still their top supplier with 76% market share. Regarding prices, the average was FOB US $ 2.60 per kilogram (-10%). Peru manage to get a better prices(FOB US $ 3.75 per kilogram) versus Mexican that got one of the lowest prices FOB US $ 2.23 per kilogram (-17%).
For the avocado, the US imported 634,169 mt (US $ 1,646 million). Of the total, Peru shipped 55,083 mt (US $ 138 million). Similar to asparagus, Mexico dominates this market with 88% participation, while Peru reaches 9%. The average price paid in the US was FOB US $ 2.60 per kilogram (-5% less compared to 2019). Peruvian avocado had the lowest prices FOB US $ 2.51 per kilogram and Mexico had one of the highest prices FOB US $ 2.63 per kilogram.
In the case of mandarins, the United States imported 167,674 mt (US $ 273 million), +13% more in volume (and 17% more in value). Peru shipped 48,303 mt valued in US $ 79 million, +88% more in volume and value. The good reception of the mandarin made Peru position itself as their first and most important supplier with 28% of participation, putting Chile in second place with 27%. Regarding prices, the average was FOB US $ 1.63 per kilogram. The Peruvian mandarin had a price of US $ 1.63 per kilogram similar with 2019. On the other hand, the Chilean mandarin had one of the highest prices: US $ 1.74 per kilogram.
