It is important to know who are the top competitors of Peru´s top exported products and which opportunities come from this analysis.
ASPARAGUS The main competitor is Mexico. The cheaper workforce (when compared to Peru) and its proximity to the United States puts Mexico in a much more privileged position.
Its location is a great advantage since 90% of the world population lives in the northern hemisphere (North America, Europe and Asia).
GRAPE The leading producers are California (United States) with 100 million cases a year and Chile with 85 million boxes. Peru coincides with California at the beginning of the harvest and with Chile at the end of the harvest. So the Peruvian season of 50 million boxes a year is stuck in the middle.
There is a greater challenge with California, since they are trying to develop new later varieties that will be harvested at the same time that Peru arrives, when prices are better.
AVOCADO By far the leader in avocado is Mexico. While they export one million tons of this fruit, Peru sells 360,000 tons, yet our country has become the second largest exporter in the world, surpassing the Netherlands and Chile.
Mexico has good weather conditions and high productivity per hectare. While Peru is the main supplier of Europe in its summer stage, Mexico is up in the United States, followed by California, which is very respectful of its local production.
Some exporters said that by 2021 a lower avocado harvest is expected in the Peruvian market as in California. 2021 might be a year with a lower offer and probably highers prices.
BLUEBERRY Peru is the main producer and has established itself for the second year in a row as the world's largest exporter.
The per capita consumption of avocado and blueberry is growing in the world and Peruvian agri-export companies are driving this. On the other hand, asparagus and grapes consumption remain stable.
Accordingly to the Ministry of Agriculture, during the first five months of the year the production of this blueberry had an increase of 17%, mainly in Lambayeque, Piura and Ancash, .
Other top producers are Chile, Australia and the United States, among other countries.
