Prices for the current California almond crop is up around USD 0.05 p/lb while the new crop is up USD 0.10-0.15 p/lb in week 30 of 2022. During the same time last year, California increased prices by USD 0.40-0.50 p/lb from an already high price point. Growers were expecting a larger increase, in line with 2021, based on the objective report and record June shipments. For the second month in a row shipment volumes have surpassed all expectations. On the other hand, the buyers and market were expecting a much larger shipment in the region of 2.75-2.85 billion pounds. Buyers are pointing towards good stock levels as the reason for the subdued price increase and will wait and see if the current price level will hold or rebound back to a lower level. Right now, there is disparity between the prices growers expect and the prices buyers are willing to pay.
