Shortage of domestic onion supply brings tough challenges to every supply-chain

Due to extreme heat during this summer in production area, shortage of domestic onion supply is quite serious, and is forecasted to continue until February 2022. Under such circumstances, only traders, food-service companies or retailers who have contracted with farmers will be able to secure sufficient quantity to meet demand. A player in the market without such designated or pre-ordered sources needs to look for counter-measures to secure supply volume to fulfill the demand from clients. Some retailers are buying smaller onions less than 60mm in diameter which should usually be an irregular-spec at normal year, and traders are shifting the target to oversea sources including Australia and China, also some others are even looking for products from Europe as well.
