This season, the cultivation of alfalfa will cover 20% lesser land due to the competition with wheat, cotton, and corn cultivation. For the cultivation of which, farmers received highly rewarded contract deals. The demand for alfalfa reached the highest record level in 2022 after the break out of the Ukrainian war and prolonged cold weather that delays harvesting. Alfalfa price follows the increase of all other animal feed such as soy and cottonseed meals. This season, the livestock is expected to expand in Greece, especially for goat and sheep flocκs, in response to the increase in goat milk and FETA cheese demand. Animal feed scarcity, especially corn and soy, will increase the cost of production tremendously.
