South Africa Halts Import Tariffs on Poultry Products for 12 Months

The South African government suspended anti-dumping duties on chicken imported from Brazil, Denmark, Ireland, Poland and Spain for 12 months in an effort to ease rising food prices.

The annual inflation rate reached 7.4% in June 2022, the highest level since the 2008 global financial crisis, with food prices rising 9%. The price of 10 kilograms (22 pounds) of frozen chicken pieces increased by nearly 14% YoY in June 2022 to USD 23.16 (R383.53). The government's intervention is aimed at easing consumer pricing on poultry products, especially as chicken is the main source of protein for South African consumers.
