The South Australia (SA) Government has rejected 11 council applications to maintain a genetically modified (GM) crop ban in their area. The decision means Kangaroo Island will be the only part of South Australia where GM crops cannot be grown. Grain growers, particularly canola seed growers, welcome the 'historic' decision.

The State Government's independent GM Crop Advisory Committee found none of the Councils had provided evidence to show remaining GM-free would be an economic benefit to the region.
