Domestic bluefin tuna suppliers in Japan are searching for alternative markets outside of Japan, causing supply disruptions in the domestic market. Due to the increased demand in North America and China, Japanese retailers have not been able to purchase bluefin tuna from major seafood trading companies in Japan. As a result, some retailers are turning to alternative markets and have started to import fresh southern bluefin tuna, which is available in the summer, from New Zealand by air freight. According to a seafood retailer, fresh southern bluefin tuna will be available at reasonable prices from July.
