According to the Tanzania Association of Pig Farmers (Tapifa), Tanzania imports 52K MT of pork annually while only producing 27K MT domestically. Tanzania consumes 79K MT of pork in total each year. The major challenge in domestic production is pig mortality in Tanzania, which can reach 20% for young pigs before weaning due to diseases and the lack of access to high-quality animal health care. By 2026, Tanzanian pig production is expected to increase by 0.6% YoY to 110K heads due to interventions in animal health, genetics, marketing, processing, and policies.
