Tanzania imports a significant volume of sugar between March and June every year to close the deficit as the sugar-producing industries suspend production for maintenance. According to government officials, in the 2023 season, the country will import only 30,000MT of sugar which is half of the 60,000MT approved for importation in 2022. Tanzania is expected to continue reducing the deficit until 2025/26. In 2022 the country produced 370,000MT of sugar whilst the target was producing 375,000MT. The government has projected to produce 700,000MT by 2025 following current investments channeled into sugarcane farming and processing projects.
