Tanzania's High Commissioner to India has successfully convinced Indian authorities to allow the importation of Tanzanian pigeon peas with a nil rate of customs duty. As a result, Tanzanian traders were invited to export 200,000MT of pigeon peas to India. India produces 17MMT of perennial legume-related crops while its annual demand stands at 23MMT. The remaining deficit of 6MMT is being addressed through importation, an opportunity that Tanzanian farmers will now exploit until March 2024.
