In just over three decades, commercial salmon farms in Tasmania have gone from nothing to an industry that has just reached AUD $1 billion (USD $0.73 billion) a year, and employing thousands of people, according to the latest Tasmanian Agri-Food Scorecard
These last figures show surprisingly that the combined value of the other two big Tasmanian agricultural industries – dairy and beef – is AUD $792 million (USD $581 million), still lower than the salmon industry today.
The biggest challenge for the industry is the prediction that production will double its value in this next starting decade, meaning a AUD$2 billion (USD $1.46 billion) industry for Tasmania.
