2022/23 Wheat Supply and Demand Estimation in South Africa

The total supply of wheat is projected at 4,320,478MT for the 2022/23 marketing season. This includes an opening stock level (on October 1, 2022) of 625,083MT, local commercial deliveries of 2,185,895MT, whole wheat imports estimated for South Africa of 1,500,000MT and a surplus of 9,500MT. The total demand (domestic plus exports) for wheat is projected at 3,639,200MT. This includes 3,370,000MT processed for human consumption, 15,000MT processed for animal consumption, 4,800MT withdrawn by producers, 1,400MT released to end consumers, 19,500MT projected seed for planting purposes and a balancing figure of 3,500MT (net receipts and net dispatches).

A projected export quantity of 25,000MT processed products and 200,000MT whole wheat is estimated for exports for the 2022/23 marketing season. The projected closing stock level for September 30, 2023 is estimated at 681,278MT . At an average processed quantity of 282,083MT per month, represents available stock levels for 2.4 months (73 days).
