The demand for Italian canned anchovies

Over the past two years, diet preferences have changed, and the consumption of canned preserved fish increased. The long shelf life, nutritional values, preservation, and comparatively low cost play an essential role in dietary choices. The sector, including canned anchovies, sardines, tuna, and mackerel, is ever-expanding, with domestic demand rising by 14%.

Currently, Italy leads the European market for imports of anchovies for processing. Nevertheless, Covid-19 and the consequences of sea-level rise in the Western Pacific Ocean have boosted the demand for Italian canned anchovies to Asian countries, confirming Italy as the second biggest European exporter.
