Recently, the European Commission decided to eliminate import duties on the Indica rice variety from Cambodia and Burma (Myanmar). This rice variety, which is sold at very low prices and in excessive volumes in Europe, can significantly harm the entire Italian rice production chain, as Italy is among the major rice producers in Europe. Some producers in the European Union may take advantage of this measure by buying raw materials at extremely low costs and reselling them at a price that is highly competitive after being processed and packed. As a result, European farmers, including Italian farmers, are the ones that suffer the most harm.
