Data released by the Ministry of Agriculture has shown that the market demand for sesame seed by the Indonesian consumers is estimated at 1200 MT in the span of July to December 2020. This amount is actually far above the projected production output by the national producers at 400 MT until the end of 2020. To offset this huge gap of 800 MT, the national demand must once again be accommodated by importing this commodity from major exporting countries such as India and Sudan that have the biggest market cap for the export of sesame seed to Indonesia. Aside from the direct consumption in its original form, a portion of the imported sesame seed would also be further processed into sesame oil and sesame seed powder by the national manufacturers.
