Chile and China Seal Historic Deal Allowing Fresh Coho Salmon Exports

During President Gabriel Boric's state visit to China, Chile inaugurated Chile Week 2023, a significant event for Chile's international trade policy. A historic agreement was reached, permitting the export of fresh Coho salmon to China. This development comes as a result of Chile's expanding exports of Coho salmon, which surged by 166% in 2023 compared to the previous year. However, Coho salmon constitutes just 11% of Chile's total salmon exports to China, which are primarily Atlantic salmon. The leading exporters of frozen Coho salmon to China in the first half of 2023 were AquaChile, Salmones Aysén, and Marine Farm. The new "Protocol on Inspection, quarantine, and Veterinary Health Requirements for aquaculture products exported from Chile to China" will also enable the export of fresh northern oysters, trout, and Coho salmon, along with facilitating Chilean mussel exports in various forms. This agreement recognizes the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service's (Sernapesca) high standards for safety control, particularly for fresh Coho salmon exports.
