In recent years, Indonesian importers have been actively importing lupin from Australia and the Netherlands, as the demand for this commodity from the national tofu and tempe manufacturers began to rise. For example, in 2018 and 2019, the imported lupin reached 100 MT and 125 MT respectively, and the import volume in 2020 has reached 80 MT, which is on pace to set the same mark as the previous year. Lupin has been used in Indonesia in recent years as an ingredient to make tofu and tempe, as it is considered a slightly cheaper and healthier alternative to soybeans. As of now, lupin has not been produced in Indonesia, resulting in the need for overseas sourcing.
