The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) has announced a potential extension of exemptions for various Chinese food imports, including seafood, lasting approximately five months. US seafood importers have incurred over USD 1.2 billion in seafood import taxes from China since former President Donald Trump initiated the trade war in July 2018. The Biden administration has indicated that the US-China trade war is expected to conclude soon. Notices on the USTR website indicate that certain Chinese seafood products will be exempt from taxes when imported into the US, with the exemption period set to end on May 31, 2024, covering 352 imported items. Some exempted seafood products include haddock, Alaska flounder, King crab meat, snow crab meat, and North American crab meat, with exemptions reaching up to 25%.
