The Global Coalition of Fresh Produce has warned that several factors are threatening the long-term viability of the Canadian fresh produce sector. Their annual report highlights cost increases, inefficiencies, transportation delays, labor shortages, dwindling consumer purchasing power, and obstacles to international trade. The coalition argues that unless measures are implemented the sector will suffer long-lasting impacts, including bankruptcies, legal disputes, food inflation, food shortages, and more in 2023. The report calls on national and international policymakers to take action to safeguard the supply of affordable fresh fruits and vegetables worldwide, including ensuring priority access to transportation networks, creating safe and well-paying jobs, and minimizing inefficiencies and bottlenecks at seaports.
