The Turkish Ministry of Commerce has added canned tomatoes (prepared or preserved by methods other than vinegar or acetic acid) and tomato paste to the list of goods subject to registration for export. Although not an outright ban, this is a clear signal to growers and trading companies that exports of these products could be restricted if supply in the domestic market drops.

This action was taken in a bid to prevent a possible price hike in the domestic market amid rising demand from Europe for Turkish agricultural products. Increased demand from Europe could result in tomato prices in Turkey increasing to USD 2.74/kg which prompted the Turkish government to prioritise the domestic market before the price hike materialises.
