Early season US blueberries out of California are currently competing with mid-season blueberries out of Spain in several export markets. Spanish producers have a competitive advantage over Californian producers as labor costs are lower and they receive more government subsidies. US berries find less competition in export markets towards the end of May through August when other country's growing seasons are over.
