Due to Hurricane Grace in Veracruz almost two and a half months ago, in Mid- August, vanilla producers from the northern region of the aforementioned state have been extremely affected by this cyclone since it damaged around 60% of crops in the area. Quality has also been greatly affected since producers had to harvest before optimal time. It is recommended to harvest after at least 9 months in order to have the flavor and vanillin content (2.5) that buyers expect in pods and beans. With this premature harvesting, the vanillin content in pods is around 0.8, therefore vanilla producers from Veracruz where around 80% of Mexican vanilla is exported, are facing difficulties due to lower production and quality.
