Seafood Powerhouse, Indonesia

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelagic country, located between the Indian and Pacific oceans. Geographically included as part of Southeast Asia and the Oceania region, Indonesia has 17,504 islands and 6.4 million square kilometer of sea area. Furthermore, Indonesia also owns the world's second-longest coastline, extending 108,800 km. This favorable geographic location allows Indonesia to be one of the largest sources and producers of marine and fisheries products such as Crab.

Tridge's Crab Meat from Indonesia

Blue Swimming Crab is the most common crab found in Indonesia. This crab commonly lives close to the coast, in shallow intertidal areas or muddy seabed to lagoons and seagrass beds. Java Sea (Lampung, West Java, East Java, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi) and Medan are where most Indonesian Blue Swimming Crabs can be found. These crabs are seasonal and are abundant during the warm weather from May to November.

Indonesia crab meats are taken from wild-caught crabs harvested from the ocean with a sustainable fishing method. The crabs are processed and exported as: (1) Canned Pasteurized, (2) Fresh Crab Meat, and (3) Frozen Crab Meat. Around 90% of Indonesian Crab meat is exported to the USA, while the rest is exported to various markets such as Singapore, Malaysia, China, Japan, and Europe.

1. Canned Pasteurized Crab Meat

Canned pasteurized crab meat is the most popular export products as it can readily be consumed. It is cooked at high temperature to kill all forms of bacteria and is packed in a can of 1lb (or 16 Oz) which are then packed in a carton box consisting of 12 Cans. They are usually exported in a 20ft container that holds around 24,000 cans. Generally, there are 4 types of Canned Pasteurized Crab Meat: Colossal (largest chunks of meat connected to the swimmer fins), Lump (whole lumps from the large body muscles), Special (small pieces of white meat from the body), and Claw (flavorful and colorful claw meat).

2. Fresh Crab Meat

Fresh crab meat has the best flavor and texture compared to pasteurized and frozen crab meat. As such, fresh crab meat is commercially more expensive than other processed styles. And since fresh crab meat has a shorter shelf life than other forms, it normally shipped via air cargo with overnight delivery to maintain the freshness for our buyers.

3. Frozen Crab Meat

Frozen crab meat is available in 2 options: unpasteurized and pasteurized. Unpasteurized frozen crab meat has a shorter shelf life than the pasteurized one and they are usually packed in a plastic bag or wrap. In general, frozen crab meat range from small to jumbo lump.
