In Meru County, there is a farmers union called Meru Coffee Millers Cooperative Union Limited (MCMCU). There are a total of 48 primary cooperatives that represent MCMCU. The 98,000 coffee producers represented by these cooperatives are all based on or nearby the volcanic slopes of Mount Kenya, which some experts refer to as "The Champagne Region of Coffee."
As the only farmer-led and farmer-owned Coffee Miller's Cooperative Union in Kenya with a milling and marketing license, MCMCU is qualified to participate in the National Coffee Auction (NCE) and sell coffee directly to buyers abroad. This ensures that farmers receive fair pricing. MCMCU collaborates with a number of foreign buyers, including those from South Korea, Europe, and the United States.
