The EU mandarin market is clearly divided into two tiers:
The first tier consists of the traditional varieties such as Clementine, Clemenvilla, and Nova. The market for these varieties have remained more or less stable, although it is evident that the expected sales prices have not exceeded the expectations set at the beginning of the season. The W32 sales price is USD 9.25-10.25/10kg depending on the size with sizes 1 and 2 being the most popular because they are used for retail netting programmes.
The second tier consists of premium varieties such as Tango and Nadorcott. These varieties are seedless, have a better taste profile and eating quality, and a bright orange colour with wonderful presentation. In W32 they are trading at around USD 16.4/10kg (sizes 1 and 1X). This is confirmed by a London wholesaler, whose rotation and sales of these varieties are progressing at a dynamic rate. For example, at the beginning of the season, the first arrival of Tango from Peru sold out in less than 2 days at prices equivalent to USD 18.2/10kg.
