Tanzania is the second-best wine brewing region in Africa despite having limited ability to produce wine. The region has only Makutupora Red and Cheninvariety of grapes. South Africa is leading at the first position which has a number of varieties like Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Colombard, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage and Merlot. In order to further boost the grape production in the region, Government of Tanzania through the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI) introduce new 13 wine grape varieties.
