Malaysia's local cocoa industry is currently facing a shortage of cocoa production which could affect the downstream development of the commodity sector if no proactive measures are taken. Previously cocoa was a commodity in Malaysia, but now it has to rely on neighboring countries, especially Indonesia and other countries such as the Ivory Coast and Ghana to obtain the supply of cocoa beans for domestic purposes. Malaysia was only able to produce 0.3% of cocoa for 2018 demand and had to import to cater to the demand.
