Lebanon is import-dependent in staple food supplies and Covid-19 caused lockdowns and international shipping disruptions have led to food shortages and price hikes, especially in rice by 41% and sugar by 50% in the period of September 2019 and February 2020. With the loss of more than 200 thousand jobs during the October '19 - February '20, a number of Lebanese farmers have started to farm their uncultivated lands in order to provide for their families and further to contribute to the country's shrinking economy.
