There has been lingering crisis of port congestion in the Nigeria despite government's interventions to end the gridlock. The introduction of barges lead to a temporary relief for the evacuation of cargoes, and reduction in the number of days spent by stranded vessels at the anchorage This situation may worsen in days to come as the Nigerian custom service has directed that the use of barges to evacuate containers should stop with immediate effect. The new policy is expected to escalate the lingering congestion challenges in Lagos ports as it currently takes about 7 - 14 days on the queue just before getting into the port.
