In 2019, both Vietnam and Japan signed an agreement which indicated that Vietnamese lychee exports have to be country of origin certificate, be regularly examined by the Plant Protected Department (PPD), and meet the Japanese requirement of phytosanitary requirements. However, due to the outbreak of coronavirus, Japanese representatives were not able to make the assessments directly. Therefore, Vietnam is in the process of negotiating with the Japanese to self-assess the quality and phytosanitary of exported lychee to Japan. If the negotiation is carried out, it would be a great chance for lychee exporters to expand their market to Japan in which is a very strict and regulated market.
