The limited supply of dates in the Eastern part of Indonesia has caused the price to go up significantly in the month of Ramadhan. In the Eastern regions, dates are now valued at an average price of IDR 100.000-120.000 at the retailer level, a 30% increase from the highest average price for this product in the first quarter of 2020. Although dates are not usually sought after by the local consumers in the region, the local importers are not able to receive their orders from the biggest dates exporting countries such as Saudi Arabia and Tunisia due to the current pandemic. Thus, the stock depleted rapidly by the beginning of Ramadhan, hence a significant price increase.
