Chicken demand has dropped by 50% in Colombia during the ongoing COVID-19 quarantine. According to FENAVI, the Federation of Poultry Producers of Colombia, the monthly consumption per capita has dropped from 3kg to between 1.5 and 2kg. The fact is that chicken is consumed more in restaurants or social events such as barbecues, which haven´t been available since the beginning of quarantine.
This issue is added to the devaluation of Colombian Peso against USD, which has been ongoing since the beginning of 2020, and got worse with the Coronavirus pandemic. Poultry production is processed in Colombia with over 70% of imported raw supplies, therefore, production costs have increased significantly.
