South Korea gives Brazilian shrimp farmers export clearance

The Brazilian rural producer will start exporting shrimp to South Korea this month, as a resume of the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA) and the Ministry of Agriculture articulations.

Cooperatives from China, South Korea, United Kingdom and Malaysia had been contacted by the National Association of the Shrimp Production Chain (Camarão BR) in order to discuss new trade developments, having the first positive response coming recently from South Korea, of which already accredited three plants for the producing country.

Within the Brazilian COVID-19 scenario, producers had became keen to exports intensifying their intentions for international demands. Around 80-90% of the shrimp & prawn sales are destined to food service, bars and restaurants, and with all outflow market options currently closed due to the quarantine and lockdowns, and the retailing markets not absorbing the actual supply, exports seem to be the only way out.

In 2019, Brazil produced 90,000 tons of shrimp and the expectation is to reach the same level of production this year again. Two more plants are now being supported in the registration process with South Korean channels, had declared the association. Actions toward opening markets of interest to the brazilian shrimp farmers will continue for the next months.
