Urban farming has grown in popularity since last year and the first quarter of 2020 as more and more companies are partnering with smallholder farmers to use hydroponic farming methods in more populous provinces such as Central Java and North Sumatra which have limited plantation area. These farmers are growing fast-moving vegetables such as spinach and red cabbage, as these commodities can be easily distributed through traditional markets or modern retailers in the region. These farmers believe that the prospect of urban farming is bright enough, considering that they can still produce a considerable amount of vegetables without having a wide plantation area. As a reference, 3-5 Kg of fresh vegetables can be produced from 3 hydroponic shelves with 280 planting holes.
