The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates world production of olive oil for the 2020/21 season at 3.03 million tonnes, down from the previous season when 'it was 3.12 million. However, countries in North Africa and the Middle East, including Morocco, will offset this decline.
The European Union remains the leading producer, with 70% of the world's olive grove. The USDA expects production prospects in the EU to reach 2.05 million tonnes of olive oil for the 2020/21 season, slightly higher than the 2019/20 season, while 'it was 2.00 million tonnes.
But according to the USDA, this figure will remain low during the 2020/21 season, which will lead to a third consecutive year of decline in world production, although this is partially offset by the continued strength of North African countries. and the Middle East (Morocco, Tunisia, etc.), where investments in the processing of olive oil and government policies aimed at increasing exports are slowly stimulating growth. Also, despite the drop in olive oil prices since 2018, the USDA predicts that they will recover slightly in 2020/21.
