The national cocoa powder industry in Indonesia is now facing an apparent competition from imported alkalized cocoa powder products from the Netherlands. This imported cocoa powder is a premium quality option and caters mainly to high-end hotels and restaurants while also targeting high-end consumers through modern retailers network in Indonesia. This Dutch cocoa powder now has gained around 30% of the total market share in Indonesia. Based on the information by the local importers, a big portion of this cocoa powder is also produced from cocoa beans that are exported from Indonesia but have gone through an advanced machinery manufacturing process in the Netherlands, before being re-distributed to Indonesia as a finished product.
