In 2012 an improved groundnut variety (samnut 24) was introduced for dry season production in Nigeria. The improved variety produces a much higher yield, needs less irrigation and is less susceptible to disease.
The groundnut produced during the dry season coincides with a peak in the global demand for groundnut seeds.
The crop is mainly grown in the northern part of Nigeria; over 85% of the groundnuts produced in the country were accounted for by Kano, Kaduna, Taraba, Bauchi, Bornu, and Adamawa states and the dry season in this region extends from November to May.
Groundnut is available all year round but the main harvest season is commences in May.
