New sand eel farms to open in South Sumatra, Indonesia

New sand eel businesses are currently being established by the local farmers in the South Sumatra province in Indonesia. Based on the data released by the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, this province still has around 2,000 hectares of land that can be used to start fresh-water fisheries to diversify the agriculture industry in this province that has relied heavily on its palm oil sector. The sand eel is viewed as a good starting point for smallholder farmers in the province as the production cost is relatively low and farmers can yield multiple times a year. It is expected that by mid-2020, this province can contribute to around 20 MT of sand eel to be distributed nationally.
