Genetically Modified (GM) maize is avoided in Saharan Africa except in countries like South Africa. However, the droughts and economic crisis that has left half the population in need of food aid have forced Zimbabwe to lift the ban on the importation of genetically modified corn for the first time in 12 years. Zimbabwe is currently buying modified maize from South Africa to shore up its reserve.
