Melon growers in Adana have been responsible for 12% of Turkey's melon production with a production area of 5,000 hectares and 200 kmt of expected production yield which is around 10% lower than last season's production yield.
However, the productivity has been lower this season with growers receiving between 3 to 5 tons of products per 1,000 square meters. Last season the growers received around 5 to 7 tons of products per 1,000 square meters. Heavy rains are reported to be the cause of declining productivity.
The price level for melons is around 0.30 USD per kg this season which was a saving grace for the melon growers amidst the declining production.
