Malaysia's papaya trade used to be limited to the local market until the hybrid variety was created by the Malaysian Institute for Agricultural Research and Development (Mardi). Today, the Malaysian papaya has managed to penetrate the international market, which is popular due to its smaller size, and it tastes sweeter than other common varieties. Although hybrid papaya has a good market in Singapore, Hong Kong, the Middle East, and Europe, the domestic market in Malaysia does not like it and only the "Sekaki" variety does, as it is bigger and cheaper.
