During the past few months the African swine fever (ASF) has been expanding to new countries. The outbreak in Papua New Guinea is quite concerning because it is believed that the infection was brought to the country by canned food, this is still to be confirmed by the authorities. Papua New Guinea reported 336 death pigs positive to ASF.
So far, this year had reported 23 new countries infected with ASF. Europe reported 12 territories: Belgium, Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, and Ukraine. Asia reported 9 territories: China, Indonesia, South Korea, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. and Africa reported 2 new countries Ivory Coast and South Africa.
Due to this information, China´s pork meat import has been growing from specific markets. Pork imports from the US was reported to be 95,892 tons , valued at 226.3 million dollars in March. This is a enormous opportunity for countries free of ASF to increase their participation in the global market.
