Every time a typhoon hits the fish-producing regions such as the eastern Visayas and Mimaropa, the Philippines will increase imports of scad mackerel or "Galunggong", as prices for this commodity have soared when supply is low. Typhoons cause fishermen to be unable to go out to sea while disrupting local seafood production, which then is depending on imported fish. Galunggong is the best known imported fish on the local market. Total imports at any one time during a typhoon can reach up to 100 million tons.
