During the second quarter of 2020, the performance of the seafood industry in Batam province in the southern region of Sumatra remained strong amid the coronavirus pandemic. In the span of April to June, for example, there was a total of 300 MT of strategic commodities from this province such as shrimp, tuna, and squid, in particular, that have been regularly and mostly exported to Singapore. This province has been the primary sourcing region for the Singaporean buyers due to its close proximity and the availability of ferries going to and from the fishing ports in Singapore to Batam. By taking advantage of this shipment availability, the buyers could still ensure that the sourced commodities would remain fresh while being able to keep the shipment price efficient as most suppliers from Batam could also offer rather competitive transport fees to Singapore.
