Morelos is one of the leading regions for rice production in Mexico. In the past few years, the production has decreased by 50% as a result of increased contamination in the production fields. The contamination is caused by chemicals which are disposed from the manufacturing plants ,and factories to the local rivers which supply rice fields with water for irrigation. The state government is currently seeking assistance from the federal government to remove the chemicals from the fields and boost the rice production.
